Shair e Aashob: Mubarik Qazi

Biography:

In colonial world, people are born with the oppression around them, they witness the worst humiliation of human kind, they are oppressed, every human sense and behavior is dehumanized by the colonial powers. In the colonial period, the writers and intellectuals are threatened not to speak and write about the colonialism and many fears so they just keep silence. But there are some brave hearts who don’t bow, neither they make themselves blind, rather they take stance and keep fighting against colonialism through their writings and poetries. Balochistan in its colonial period is witnessing worst oppression, and after every threat and fear, there are some brave writers and poets who keep writing and exposing the colonial oppression and expressing stories of oppressed Baloch people. One of the brave and historical figures is the Shair e Aashob: Mubarik Qazi.

Qazi was born in 24 December 1956, in the house of Khouda Amanullah, in Pasni. He did his primary education in his native city of Pasni and completed his matriculation in 1972. For further studies he went to Karachi and took admission in Sindh Muslim Law collage but could not complete his education due to financial problems, he returned to Pasni and started to work in the fisheries department.
Inspired by his Uncle, Qazi Abdul Sabir, who was a poet, Mubarik started poetry and took the name “Qazi” as his poetry name. His first poetry was published in 1977, after which a legacy of a revolutionary poet started. He went to Karachi in 1978 again to continue his education and complete his intermediate and took admission in BA in Arts College and later did his masters degree in International Relations from University of Balochistan, Quetta. Finally, after his graduation he joined Pasni Fish Harbour and retired as its director of Finance.

Qazi was living in a colonial society where oppression, injustice was part of daily life. He did not keep himself silent over this oppression and joined students politics in the platform of Baloch Students Organisation and became an active member of the organisation. The students politics made him more mature and ideologically stronger than ever. Due to his political activities he was arrested in 1981 and incarcerated in Mach Jail but restrictions and imprisonment could not stop him from doing his revolutionary works and he continued to do his political and literary works during imprisonment. From the jail, he wrote some historical poetries which represented the ongoing Pakistani state oppression on Baloch nation. This wasn’t the only time he was arrested rather he was later arrested in 2007 due to his poetry written upon the oppression and state violence in Balochistan following the killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti in 2006. He overcame every suffering, from arrest, state threats to weight of sacrificing his beloved son Kambar Mubarik. But he didn’t break neither bowed, rather he became more stronger in his ideas and writings.

Mubarik Qazi was a revolutionary poet who wrote against the colonial violence imposed upon Balochistan by the tyrant Pakistan, and advocated for independence of Balochistan. Beauty of Balochistan, state violence, praise for Sarmachars and Johudkars and love for his motherland can be seen in his poetry. He was not merely a poet but an iconic figure who fought the colonialism through his writings, spreading his intellect through poetry among the Baloch Nation. He praised every aspect of Baloch and Balochistan, and his poetries echo from revolutionary characters to the desert and mountains of Balochistan. Due to his revolutionary poetries, BSO Azad paid tribute by dedicating the name “ Shaair e Aashob”, meaning “Poet of Revolution” to him.

Mubarik Qazi was a revolutionary poet who endured torture from the colonial state, sacrificed his son for the National cause, and still continued his support for the struggle of independent Balochistan. He continued his struggle through literature and poetry, and revolutionized the youth through his Poetry. He passed away on 16 September, 2023 in Turbat, and left behind a legacy of sacrifice and revolution. His 10 books have been published in his lifetime, educating and encouraging the Baloch Youth. Baloch Students Organisation Azad pays richest tribute to Shair e Aashob, Mubarik Qazi for the great and historical contributions in Baloch liberation movement.
